Twelve-year-old Miguel, who lives in a Mexican village with a family of artisans, secretly aspires to become a musician. This desire is hidden from others, as in their family music is perceived as a curse. It all started with the fact that the boy's great-great-grandfather abandoned his family for musical ambitions, and this story still haunts his descendants, making any musical themes forbidden. The hero finds out that there is some kind of secret connection between him and the famous late singer Ernesto de la Cruz. Deciding to find his idol, Miguel goes to the Realm of the Dead, where he encounters the souls of his ancestors. There he meets a skeletal spirit named Hector, who agrees to become his guide. Together they embark on a journey to find the legendary musician.
